Blenheim Underwriting Limited (BUL) is a Lloyd’s managing agent that is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. Blenheim Underwriting is responsible for the management of Syndicate 5886 at Lloyd’s.
Syndicate 5886 began writing in January 2017 and comprises a mix of direct and reinsurance business both open market and via delegated authorities, including via our MGA trading platform Blenheim Partnerships, where considered appropriate.
Blenheim Underwriting trades in areas where we believe our experience adds value to the Lloyd’s market and is capable of sustainable profit without taking undue risk. We are receptive to looking at future opportunities presented by proven teams with their own franchise that fit the ethos of the business.

Lawrence has worked in the Lloyd’s Market since 1983, including over 25 years being managing director of two highly successful Lloyd’s managing agency businesses; Bankside, 1990 -1999 and Cathedral, 2000-2016, leaving the first of these to become a founding principal of the second. He has also served on many senior London Insurance Market governing and trade bodies and committees during his career, including the Council of Lloyd’s. 2012-2017, the LMA (Lloyd’s Market Association) Board, 2008-2017, the LMG (London Market Group) 2014-2016 and as a trustee of the Lloyd’s Charities Trust, 2008 -2017. He has been Chairman of Blenheim Underwriting Limited since 2017.

John is Chief Executive Officer of Blenheim Underwriting Limited and a director of Blenheim Partnerships Limited. John was one of the founders and Chief Financial Officer of Cathedral Underwriting Limited from start up in 2000 to sale to Lancashire Insurance PLC in 2013, remaining as CFO of Cathedral until 2016.

Peter has worked in the Lloyd’s marketplace for over thirty years and co-founded the White Bear Capital Group in 2016. Peter is Chief Executive Officer of Blenheim Partnerships Limited and a Director of Blenheim Underwriting Limited. In 2000 Peter was appointed CEO and one of the founders of Cathedral Capital Limited from start up to the sale to Lancashire Holdings Limited in 2013, remaining as CEO of Cathedral within the Lancashire Group until 2016. Prior to joining Cathedral, Peter had 14 years of Insurance Industry experience including being appointed to Managing Director of Wren Lloyd’s Advisors in 1995, working on establishing the first generation of Lloyd’s Corporate Capital Vehicles. Peter holds a BSC (Econ) in Economics and Geography from University College London.

Tessa has worked in the Lloyd’s market in compliance and corporate governance roles for more than 15 years. She joined Blenheim in early 2017 having previously worked at MS Amlin and Cathedral Underwriting. Tessa was appointed the Compliance Director for Blenheim Partnerships 2019-2023 and from 2023 as Head of Compliance and Compliance Director for Blenheim Underwriting Ltd. She holds a LLB and LLM in law from Kings College London and is a certified Data Protection Officer.

Nick joined the White bear Group in 2016 to help establish Syndicate 5886 at Lloyd’s of which he is now Active Underwriter. Prior to this Nick worked for over 35 years in both the Lloyds and Company markets, focusing on primarily US Treaty reinsurance. Before joining White Bear Group in 2016, Nick was the US Treaty Underwriter for Cathedral Syndicate from 2002. Prior to that he was head of the Treaty reinsurance team at SVB Syndicates. He started his career as an underwriting assistant in 1985 at the Excess Ins Co.

Jay has over 25 years’ experience in the Lloyd’s of London Insurance Market, which commenced in 1997, working across a wide range of general insurance sectors, including the run off market. He has previously worked at Creechurch Underwriting, Cavell Managing Agency, Ascot Underwriting Ltd and Cathedral Underwriting Limited prior to joining Blenheim Underwriting Ltd at its inception in January 2017 as Syndicate Accountant where he set up the Group Finance Function and all the regulatory reporting requirements for the Group and Syndicate 5886. In 2019, he was promoted to Syndicate Financial Controller and in 2026 was promoted to the position of Finance Director of Blenheim Underwriting Limited. Jay is a qualified Accountant with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and has achieved Fellowship status (FCCA). He is also a member of various Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) committees.

David joined Blenheim in 2021 to establish the Political Risk account and oversee wider syndicate strategy in the class, before transitioning to his current non-executive director role. David has worked for several Lloyd’s syndicates and has over 30 years’ experience in a range of Political Specialty classes. Before joining Blenheim, David worked as Active Underwriter of Amtrust at Lloyd’s Syndicate 1861. Prior to this he held Political Risk and Political Violence Lead Underwriter roles at ANV 1861, Ascot 1414 and XL Brockbank 861. David is also a qualified solicitor, having previously worked at Clifford Chance.

Ken is a chartered accountant with over 30 years finance experience in insurance, particularly in and around the Lloyd’s market. Ken qualified with PKF Littlejohn before moving to Deloitte, specializing in advising businesses in general insurance industry. Ken was Finance Director and Chief Finance Officer of Chaucer Holdings PLC from 2003 until 2013, subsequent to which he held executive roles with Barbican (Managing Director) and the Lloyd’s Market Association (Director of Finance and Risk). Since 2019, Ken has acted for a number of companies in the Lloyd’s market as a NED and chair of Audit Committee. Ken is also a governor and chair of Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee for Truro and Penwith College. Ken is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Mike is a qualified management accountant with over 30 years insurance industry experience, including over 15 years in the Lloyd’s members agency, Lloyd’s broker and Lloyd’s managing agency environments, in the latter to Managing and Financial Director level. Currently a Non-Executive Director (having previously been Chairman, CEO/CFO) of 1st Central, a Guernsey based financial services group which he co-founded in 2007 and whose motor and home insurance brand is distributed through the UK’s main price comparison sites.

Chris is the former deputy chairman of Willis Re and prior to that, CEO of Willis Re Specialty with nearly 30 years of broking experience to the highest level in international and specialty reinsurance and London market reinsurance. Chris is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Insurers.

Shirley joined the Group as the Company Secretary in September 2024. She brings a breadth of knowledge with over 25 years’ experience in Corporate Governance. In particular, Shirley has been working within the Financial Services Sector for over 14 years, this includes over 5 years within the Insurance Industry. Previous roles include Senior Assistant Company Secretary at Handelsbanken PLC, Assistant Company Secretary at Beazley PLC, and Assistant Company Secretary at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe Ltd.
